Mayor Greg Ballard joined school and civic leaders, as well as students and their parents, at Friday's opening of a new charter school on the Southwestside. The Mayor's Office of Education Innovation sponsored the school.

Damar Services says Damar Charter Academy at 6067 Decatur Blvd. is the first charter school in the state to focus on serving children with special learning needs, including those with significant developmental, emotional and behavioral challenges.

Ballard was joined at the dedication ceremony by Greg Johnson, president and chief executive of Damar Services, who is also chairman of the Damar Charter Academy board; Jim Dalton, superintendent of Damar Charter Academy; and Dwight Ashley, the new school's principal.

The school, located on the grounds of Damar Services, expects to serve a maximum of 150 students in kindergarten through 12th grade.
