Super Bowl project creates homes for homeless 9.22.10

Indianapolis-area Realtors are doing their part to help rejuvenate the Near Eastside as part of a community improvement project coinciding with Super Bowl 2012.

Realtors are fixing up 32 residences that will eventually become homes for homeless families.

The focal point today is at 822 N. Tacoma Ave., the site of a formerly abandoned duplex that is being gutted and renovated. Later this year it will be home to two homeless families. The first is expected to move into the residence later this fall.

The Realtors Foundation -- the philanthropic arm of the Metropolitan Indianapolis Board of Realtors, or MIBOR -- has pledged $500,000 to help revive the St. Clair Place neighborhood, where about 40 percent of the homes and lots are vacant or abandoned, many of those due to
foreclosure.

Of the 32 homes, 21 will be renovations and 11 will be new construction, all in St. Clair Place neighborhood.

“Our goal is to give homeless families a second lease on life by not only providing affordable housing, but ensuring they have services they need to become successful and provide for their families,” said Regina Jones, president of the foundation who is employed with the realty firm Carpenter.

Attending an event today are Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard; Mark Miles, chairman of the 2012 Super Bowl Host Committee; Jones, and James Taylor, chief executive officer of the John H. Boner Community Center.
