Indy Bike Hub opens to the public 9.14.11

WISH-TV
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Wednesday is the grand opening of what organizers are calling a new hub that they hope will change the way people travel to downtown Indianapolis. It is called the Indy Bike Hub YMCA, and it is located inside the City Market.

The hub is being touted as the only one of its kind in the entire nation.

You can roll in on your bike, work out, head up to the showers, store your stuff and then go right over to work downtown.

If you already belong to the YMCA, you already have access to the bike hub. There is also a monthly or daily rental fee.

“We think this can change the way people use bikes downtown,” said YMCA Executive Director Karin Ogden.

Aside from the YMCA, the Bicycle Garage does sales. There are also different bike advocacy groups housed there and the IMPD bike patrol uses the space as well.

The Indy Bike Hub is open from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays and has weekend hours as well.
Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard says by the end of 2011, the city will have more than doubled the miles of bike lanes in Indianapolis.

This project is all part of a vision to make Indianapolis more bike-friendly.

“More and more people are getting comfortable with riding. I think we are well on our way there,” said Karin Ogden, YMCA Executive Director.
