INDIANAPOLIS -- Indianapolis-based Angie's List announced Tuesday that it plans to expand its headquarters in the city and create up to 500 jobs by 2015.
The company provides consumer reviews on local service companies. It plans to pour $11.5 million to expand its facilities on Indianapolis' east side.
The Indiana Economic Development Corp. said Angie's List had already invested more than $15 million in 10 years to renovate several properties and build its facility.
Angie's List's commitment to create 500 new jobs and make a major investment in their corporate campus is a game changer for the near east side of Indianapolis," said Mayor Greg Ballard. "Angie's List has served as a catalyst for change along the East Washington Street corridor. This newest plan will allow them to have an even greater impact in an important and transitional area and on our city as a whole."
Angie's List has about 500 workers in Indianapolis. The company launched in 1995 in Columbus, Ohio, with co-founder Angie Hicks as the sole employee. It moved to Indianapolis in 1999.
Angie's List currently provides its review service in more than 200 cities in the U.S. Hicks said it made sense to expand in Indianapolis.
"We had offers from a lot of places inviting us to relocate. We gave them serious consideration, because we wanted to make a smart business decision, no matter what our hearts might want us to do," Hicks said. "I want to thank our state and city leaders for helping us stay here on Indianapolis' east side, where our hearts are, and where we'll continue to grow."
The company already has a number of job postings, most in the information technology, sales and member services.
Angie's List cut some jobs in 2009 in the midst of economic strife. The layoffs came after the company had previously announced plans to double the workforce from 400 to 800.
Indianapolis will pitch in $7.1 million for infrastructure and neighborhood improvements by combining tax increment financing, tax credits and RebuildIndy funds.
IEDC offered Angie's List up to $7 million in performance-based tax credits and up to $100,000 in training grants based on the company's job creation plans.
