Neighborhoods Need Friend Like Ballard 8.15.11
INDIANAPOLIS STAR LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Mayoral candidate Melina Kennedy's recent announcement that she would curtail Mayor Greg Ballard's infrastructure program is bad news for our city's neighborhoods. Previous administrations have neglected the neighborhoods and were attracted to big investments like the highly visible Hoosier Dome, Lucas Oil Stadium, Conseco Fieldhouse and the airport. But not everyone can afford a Colts or Pacers ticket or plane fare to fly on a vacation.
Ballard has rightly turned his attention to building up our too-long-neglected neighborhoods, which have been the victim of deferred maintenance and updates from previous administration. Kennedy's plan to divert funds away from these road, street and sidewalk improvements is bad news for average residents. There are many needs and the city can't fund them all, but now is not the time to divert public funds from our neighborhoods.
