City to Improve 10 Parks 7.7.11
INSIDE INDIANA BUSINESS
INDIANAPOLIS – Mayor Greg Ballard today announced an unprecedented number of improvements to Indianapolis parks under the RebuildIndy program, the City’s initiative to repair and replace crumbling infrastructure throughout Marion County.
“Since last fall, we have directed millions of dollars through RebuildIndy to make improvements on streets and sidewalks where residents live and work,” said Mayor Ballard. “Now we are taking RebuildIndy restoration into areas where residents play and strengthening neighborhoods by investing more than $2 million into parks around the City.”
Indianapolis Parks Foundation Executive Director Cindy Porteous joined Mayor Ballard for the announcement at Riverwood Park. Department of Public Works engineers are working to complete nearly all of the work by Labor Day; Eagle Creek Park south of 56th Street is expected to be completed next summer. The restoration work includes:
Brookside Park: Resurfacing near family recreation center and entrances.
Eagle Creek Park north of 56th Street: Resurfacing park entrance and entrance to the rowing center.
Eagle Creek Park south of 56th Street: Adding an entrance off of 56th Street and making drainage improvements.
Garfield Park: Resurfacing several parking lots and Conservatory Drive.
Perry Park: Resurfacing parking lot and entrances.
Riverwood Park: Resurfacing access road and parking lot.
Sahm Park: Resurfacing access road, north parking lot and main entrance from 91st Street to the fire station.
Soap Box Derby Hill: Resurfacing from 30th Street to Riverside Drive.
Southeastway Park: Resurfacing roads and installing paths to picnic shelters.
Tarkington Park: Resurfacing and repairing sidewalks.
Wes Montgomery Park: Resurfacing entrances, access road and parking lots.
“With more than 200 parks in Indianapolis, residents and visitors have a vast array of recreational options,” said City-County Council President Ryan Vaughn. “However, when pavement is uneven, sidewalks are cracked or drainage problems are prevalent, people might be hesitant to explore our city’s parks. Thanks to Mayor Ballard’s commitment to RebuildIndy, parks all across the county are being rehabilitated during Indy Parks’ centennial celebration.”
