Tax breaks for businesses may bring 583 jobs to Indy 7.5.11

INDIANAPOLIS STAR

Two manufacturers and a car-leasing company want property tax abatements to create 583 jobs in Indianapolis in the next four years.
The new abatement requests will be considered Wednesday by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Development Commission.
The job-creating proposals include:

• Carrier Corp., which wants to spend $36.5 million in research and development and a second production line at its high-efficiency furnace and fan coil plant at 7310 W. Morris St. The expansion would create 276 jobs by 2015 and help retain the 1,450 jobs already at the plant.
• Pure Power Technologies, which wants to invest $19 million in new equipment at the Navistar truck engine plant at 5565 Brookville Road. The plant had been targeted for closing, but “this decision has been reconsidered and there is a significant focus on growing competitive advantage for the Brookville Road facility to enable Navistar business to come back as well as grow external sales,” the commission said in its tax abatement report. The investment by Pure Power would create 250 jobs by 2013 and retain 30 jobs.
• Enterprise Leasing Co. of Indianapolis, which wants to spend $2.1 million to remodel a 25,000-square-foot building at 7111 W. Washington St. for its administrative offices. The project would relocate 57 jobs to Indianapolis.
