Size Of Criminal Gang Unit Increased 7.5.11

INDIANAPOLIS -- Indianapolis police have increased the size of the criminal gang unit, and authorities are working more closely with state and federal prosecutors to address a growing trend of younger, more violent street gangs.
More than 140 juveniles have been arrested so far this year in gang-involved crimes, 6News' Jack Rinehart reported.
Police think the number reflects a burgeoning concern as the city's youth moves beyond property to personal crimes.
"I think we've seen an increase across the city, with juveniles being involved in shootings, stabbings, homicides," said IMPD Deputy Chief of Investigations Bill Lorah. "It's the violent crimes, and at a very early age."
Police arrested six suspected gang members last week, including three boys age 14, a 16-year-old and two 17-year-olds.
Marion County law enforcement agencies said they have made youth violence a priority, and offenders are facing a criminal gang activity charge, when appropriate.
"The criminal gang enhancement gives us the possibility of doubling the sentence of any underlying criminal charges," said Marion County Prosecutor Terry Curry.
Jamar Perkins, 16, was recently arrested on charges of murder and robbery. Police said he belonged to a gang that terrorized residents near 42nd Street and Post Road.
"From the district level, narcotics officers to the street officers, we have gang contact sheets," Lorah said. "All that information is compiled and sent to the gang unit to look at and develop more intelligence. Ultimately, our goal is to put them in prison."
