Former Winona Hospital to be Demolished by Fall 7.26.11

Indianapolis city officials say the old Winona Hospital will be demolished by early Fall.

Deputy Mayor Michael Huber says the city is close to a deal to sell the site to the Indianapolis Children's Museum. The museum plans to redevelop the site and create public space and housing.

Huber says $2 million in federal Housing and Urban Development Money will cover the cost of demolition. Winona has been vacant since it closed back in 2004.

Since then, the abandoned site has been the target of vagrants and vandals. Despite that, the site is still considered prime real estate in the Meridian street corridor leading to downtown Indianapolis.

Huber says details are still be worked out on how much the Children's Museum is paying for the site. He adds demolition is phase one in the museum's plans.

There are three phases and the project is expected to take several years.
