Desert Storm/Desert Shield vets invited to Brickyard 7.20.11

INDIANAPOLIS STAR

The city of Indianapolis wants veterans to storm the Brickyard this summer in honor of the Persian Gulf War with Iraq 20 years ago.
Mayor Greg Ballard, a former U.S. Marine, and organizers of the Brickyard 400 will salute Operation Desert Storm and Desert Shield veterans July 31 at the opening ceremonies.
The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is asking veterans to wear the military dress they did then. Participants will receive two Brickyard 400 tickets and transportation to and from the track from Stout Field.
"I encourage any Desert Storm/Shield veterans in Central Indiana who can participate on Race Day to do so and to help make this a special event," Ballard said in a prepared statement. "Twenty years ago, Desert Storm and Desert Shield had a profound impact on our nation, our community, our service men and women, and their families."
The United State fought Iraq beginning in January 1991 in response to Iraq's invasion of Kuwait. Desert Shield was the effort to protect Saudi Arabia and its oil fields from the Iraqi invasion. Desert Storm was the war.
"I know that Brickyard 400 fans look forward to saluting some of these brave men and women who will be participating in this year's pre-race ceremonies," said IMS Corporation President and Chief Executive Officer Jeff Belskus.
Desert Storm/Shield veterans should contact the Indianapolis-Marion County Veteran Services Office. Email veteranservices@indy.gov or call (317) 327-8387). Responses are due by Friday.
