Charles Williams Award of Excellence goes to Mayor Greg Ballard 7.14.10

Indianapolis Recorder

Greg Ballard has been the mayor of Indianapolis since scoring one of the biggest political upsets in the city’s history by defeating incumbent Bart Peterson in 2007. Before voyaging into the realm of politics, Ballard had an accomplished career in other walks of life. His former work includes serving as the North American operations manager for Bayer in Indianapolis, 23 years of service with the U.S. Marine Corps, and working as a self-employed leadership and management consultant. He earned numerous awards during his military service, including the Legion of Merit, the Kuwait Liberation Medal, the Humanitarian Service Medal, and the Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, and as a consultant wrote the book The Ballard Rules: Small Unit Leadership.

During his tenure as mayor, Ballard has shown an effort to provide equal opportunities in the city. His office oversees the Department of Minority and Women Business Development, the Mayor’s Advisory Council on Disabilities and the Race and Cultural Relations Leadership Network, and has recognized outstanding community achievements in inclusion with the Mayor’s Celebration of Diversity Awards.

An overall effort to make the city better is what has landed him the Williams Award. “Mayor Greg Ballard’s commitment to the city of Indianapolis has certainly made it the kind of city, where individuals want to live, work and raise their families,” said Expo’s CEO and President Tanya Bell.
