Grant money from the Eagledale/Lafayette Square Area Weed & Seed program has been used to purchase six new portable breath testers for Indianapolis Metro Police.
Sgt. Matthew Grimes says the new equipment is greatly needed.
"I was working one night and learned there were none available that day, so I had one, and I had to go take care of the incident with my portable breath test," Grimes said.
The tests will be used by mid-shift patrol officers at the Northwest District. About 800 disposable PBT mouthpieces accompany the Alco-Sensors.
The sensors normally cost about $500 each.
Weed & Seed is a federal grant program to prevent, control, and reduce crime by "weeding" out the most violent crimes from a designated neighborhood while "seeding" the area through social and economic revitalization.
