Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard put foot to pedal Friday and commuted to work along with hundreds of other local bicyclists on National Bike to Work Day.
Ballard met his fellow bicycle enthusiasts at Monument Circle in Downtown Indianapolis for a free breakfast, giveaways and information about more sustainable forms of transportation.
"Indianapolis has become a bicycle-friendly city, and the construction of an additional 34 miles of on-street bike lanes in 2011 will further improve connectivity and transportation options," Ballard said in a news release.
By the end of this year, Indianapolis will have 63 bike-lane miles, and "residents will be able to bike from county line to county line without leaving bike lanes," he added.
Residents also are invited to join Ballard on the third annual Mayor's Bike Ride at 10 a.m. June 4 to showcase the city's newest bike lanes on Lafayette Road. To learn more, visit www.sustainindy.org.
