Work on infrastructure and roads gets going 4.15.11

INDIANAPOLIS STAR

Get ready for a spring resurgence of cone zones on Indianapolis streets as road paving and other infrastructure projects ramp up for the year.
Mayor Greg Ballard on Thursday kicked off the start of the construction season at the site of a resurfacing project on Arlington Avenue on the Southeastside. Earlier this year, he announced a $32 million batch of road, bridge and sidewalk projects that will take place through this summer; that's on top of $55 million in projects that began in September and are in the finishing stages.
The city's RebuildIndy initiative also is targeting drainage and flooding problems in some areas, as well as tearing down abandoned homes.
"There's more coming," Ballard said before the news conference. "We think that between the fall of 2010 and later this summer, we should have more than 380 miles of resurfacing done; 105,000 linear feet of curbs and sidewalks, new and old; and 16 bridges."
The new projects touch roads in each township. One major project will repave Meridian Street in most of the stretch from 38th Street to 86th Street. Work from 38th to 54th Street was supposed to begin at the start of April, but the Department of Public Works now says the project will begin Monday.
