An urban garden is going up in a spot where trashed once littered a northeast side neighborhood. Mayor Greg Ballard made the announcement in the 2400 block of North Rural Street Monday. That's in the Martindale Brightwood neighborhood.
The vacant lot where the urban farm is being constructed used to be a dumping ground for junk. Now, it will help feed the neighborhood.
The mayor said urban gardens are a great way to turn a neglected plot of land into a healthy one and anyone can do it.
"I'd just ask people to continue to look at this as an opportunity to make a difference on their block and in their neighborhood.  Urban gardens are a good way to go, it brings people together, it teaches kids a lot and we want people to come out and do it,” Mayor Ballard said.
He said he plans to develop 50 urban gardens in Center Township by the end of the year. Already, 35 have been established.
