Indianapolis Murder Rate Hits Lowest Mark Since 1995 3.9.11

INDIANAPOLIS -- The number of murders in Indianapolis in 2010 was 96, equaling figures from 2000, which was the lowest mark since 1995, officials said.
The yearly homicide report, which was released on Tuesday, provides violent crime statistics annually.
Indianapolis police track the number of homicides, parsing those that involve "the unlawful, willful killing of another human being" as a murder.
Officials said there were 14 noncriminal homicides in the city in 2010, holding the murder total at 96.
The number of reported rapes was up from 2009 to 2010 to 479, but the number of reported robberies slipped by about 500, from 3,929 in 2009 to 3,427 last year.
Statistics showed the number of aggravated assaults in Indianapolis on the upswing, from 5,271 in 2009 to 5,530 in 2010.
Overall, violent crime decreased in Indianapolis from year-to-year, with 9,760 in 2009 to 9,532 in 2010.
The city reports its crime statistics to the FBI each year as part of the Uniform Crime Reporting Statistics program.
