Indianapolis To Call In Contractors In Pothole Blitz 2.17.11
WRTV
INDIANAPOLIS -- With fleetingly warm February temperatures in control, Indianapolis announced a pothole blitz Thursday to try to fix as many problems as possible before winter settles in again.
The city said it will begin using private contractors in a pothole blitz to apply more permanent fixes to a pervasive problem.
"(Mayor Greg Ballard's) direction is for our team to be as proactive as possible, and this aggressive approach will help Indianapolis residents and commuters as they travel our streets," said David Sherman, director of the Department of Public Works.
Crews plan to put down hot asphalt, which is typically reserved for later in the year, when temperatures warm up more consistently.
"Having access to hot asphalt means that the repairs made by pothole crews will last longer," said Kara Brooks, public information officer for DPW. "Typically during this time of year, the crews use a cold asphalt mix that works as a short-term fix until the asphalt plants are open."
Rain and cooler temperatures expected over the weekend and early next week will slow down efforts.
Residents can report potholes by visiting indy.gov/pothole or calling the Mayor's Action Center at 317-327-4MAC.
