City Announces Bike Lane Openings 10.7.11

INDIANAPOLIS SUSTAINABLE LIVING EXAMINER

The city of Indianapolis announced yesterday that construction is almost complete on a series of new bike lanes that will bring the citywide total to 65 miles and ease the way around town for bicycle commuters.  Work is wrapping up on new bike lanes along Lafayette Road from downtown to 71st Street, 46th Street from College Avenue to Emerson Avenue and Shelby Street/Madison Avenue to County Line Road.

In addition, the city has also started implementing "green lanes" to help keep bicycle commuters safe.  Green lanes are used when bike lanes shift, such as around turn lanes and similar obstacles.  The lane is painted green as a warning to both cyclists and motorists.

Indianapolis is rapidly becoming one of America's most bicycle-friendly cities.  Last month, a YMCA-operated bicycle hub opened downtown.  Today, Mayor Ballard is expected to announce the additon of 75 miles of additional bike lanes which will be built over the next 7 years.  Combined with existing lanes, this will push the city's total to over 200 miles.  While this pales when compared with San Diego's 850 miles of bike routes and trails, it compares favorably to other cities in the Midwest.
