Ad misguided to blame mayor for schools 10.7.11

INDIANAPOLIS STAR LETTER TO THE EDITOR

I always enjoy a good political fight, regardless of the combatants. However, after viewing Melina Kennedy's TV ad blaming IPS' shortcomings on our current mayor, I would suggest that it is a lot more than just political rhetoric. All should know that the mayor, regardless of political affiliation, has nothing to do with local education, whether it is failing or soaring to the heights. The people elect a school board, which hires a superintendent, principals and teachers.

The school board sets the goals of the school district, selects the textbooks, buys the supplies and makes any decisions relevant to the district. The mayor of a city has no place at the table when it comes to public education. The mayor has no input, nor does he or she have any decision-making power.

Kennedy's ad, while well done, is completely wrong, regardless of the party she represents.
