City Seeking Sustainability Award Applicants 1.13.11

INDIANAPOLIS –Seeking to recognize the efforts made in 2010 to transform Indianapolis into a more sustainable city, Mayor Greg Ballard is looking to reward the impact made by Indianapolis businesses, not-for-profits, schools and other organizations. The 2010 Sustainability Awards application may be downloaded at www.sustainindy.com/awards and must be submitted by 5 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 4, 2011.
“Creating a more sustainable Indianapolis is a top priority for my administration, and, each year, I am impressed with the innovative thinking behind the sustainability initiatives created by our local businesses, organizations and schools. The awards provide a unique opportunity to recognize our shared commitment to making Indianapolis a more livable city,” said Mayor Ballard.
The awards, presented by the Office of Sustainability, McKinney Green Initiatives Fund and the Greater Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce, are designed to inspire innovation, showcase impact, reward leadership and promote education around the principles of sustainability. Projects must have been completed in Marion County between Jan. 1, 2010, and Dec. 31, 2010.
Five awards will be given to honor excellence in the water, land, air, energy and reduce, reuse, recycle categories.
“What better way to start a new year than to award sustainable initiatives from the past year,” said Kären Haley, director of the City’s Office of Sustainability. “The second annual Indianapolis Sustainability Awards also allows the City to thank the first year applicants for leading Mayor Ballard’s charge to create a more sustainable and livable city.”
Last year the City received more than 70 applications for the Indianapolis Sustainability Awards. Even more are anticipated to participate this year in the awards program sponsored by Citizens Energy Group, HNTB Corporation, Indianapolis Power and Light and Performance Services.
The 2010 Indianapolis Sustainability Awards will be presented by Mayor Ballard at a March 24 luncheon held at the Indianapolis Marriott Downtown. The awards will again be emceed by local green living expert, Sara Snow.
