A Northeastside bakery will expand and add 43 jobs, the Indianapolis mayor has announced.
Family-owned Harlan Bakeries, 7575 Georgetown Road, will invest $14 million in the 135,000-square-foot expansion, said a statement from Paula Freund, Mayor Greg Ballard's press secretary. The company also will add $4 in equipment.
The expansion is being financed through Recovery Zone Facility bonds issued by the city, and at no cost to taxpayers. A local bank backs the bonds, so no tax dollars are at risk, even in the event of default, the statement said.
Harlan has facilities in Avon and Indianapolis, as well as in Arkansas, Illinois, Colorado and Nova Scotia, Canada. The company's bagels and pies can be found in U.S. eateries and grocery stores, including Walmart, Sam's Club and Costco. The expansion will increase the production of nutritional cookie and energy bar products.
Harlan employs 343 people at the Pike Township facility. Of those positions, 302 are filled by minorities. The company expects 38 of the 43 new jobs also to be filled by minority applicants.
